World Volunteer Day was designated by the United Nations in 1985 as an international observance day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism. Mamanuca Environment Society hosted its corporate sponsors together with the member resorts which is Likuliku Lagoon Resort and Castaway Island Resort. There were 33 volunteers altogether from Fiji Airways and ANZ bank that took part in Tree planting programme at Likuliku and Coral planting at Castaway island resort.

Tree planting at Likuliku Lagoon Resort promotes the importance of having a dry littoral coastal forest which is home to the critically endangered Fiji Crested Iguana. “Planting trees at Likuliku will raise the awareness on the protection of the Crested Iguana that will contribute stabilizing the Iguana population”, said Steve Anstey, Mamanuca Environment Society Treasurer.

Likuliku Lagoon Resort has been closely liaising with Sigatoka- based Kula Eco Park and the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia and the San Diego Zoo in California, to provide more studies and data on the Crested Iguana.

The volunteer programme provided an insight to the work MES is involved in with its member resorts. Participants also got to learn about plant and animal species that are under threat. The programme ended with certificate presentations together with refreshment provided by the resort.
