The island of Mana was full of exciting events between the 23rd and the 27th of September as it commemorated World Maritime Day. With the theme, Sustainable Development: IMO’s contribution beyond Rio+20, Mana Island Resort management organised the celebration to be held in conjunction with the usual E-Day program to ensure the weeklong celebration ended successfully

Organised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), World Maritime Day focuses on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, and the marine environment and to emphasize a particular aspect of IMO’s work.

MES was happy to assist in facilitating the environmental aspects of the celebration. The day started off with all interested participants registering their attendance. MES Project Manager, Mrs. M Vakacola then gave a short environmental presentation on corals and how the maritime industry could contribute to the protection of coral reefs in addition to explaining the importance of the event being commemorated around the world. Charts were on display to further clarify information being explained by Mrs. Vakacola.

Guest participants were all excited and interested in taking part in the next part of the program following the presentation which was coral planting. With the help of activities staff, coral planting techniques were demonstrated to the participants and slowly they were given chance to plant coral fragments on the coral cookies. After planting all coral specimens, the iron table was then taken to the nursery out on the Mana Island in house reef along the North Beach.

The highlight of the day was the release of a two year old hawksbill turtle back to the ocean. The turtle is a unique marine reptile that is widely endangered in Fiji. A conservation strategy has been implemented to monitor and assure turtle’s wellbeing as well as ensure there is a strong commitment dedicated to their restoration and conservation. Turtle tagging is a paramount technique used and was implemented on Mana Island. The turtle was named Tanaka to commemorate departing Mana Island Resort and Spa General Manager, Mr Masao Tanaka.  Hawksbill Tanaka was tagged on both arms and released to the ocean as it began to journey into its new life.

The day ended with refreshments provided by the management.
