South Sea Island resort (SSI) has initiated a new project on clam farming and coral planting. The main purpose of the project is to restore the health of the marine life on their surrounding reef, in particular, their very important dive sites. Their reef has really suffered from the natural effects of cyclones, floods, climate change and the chronic crown of thorns starfish situation. Sedimentation, trampling on corals, and over exploitation of marine resources has also taken its toll on the declining health of the reef.

The launching was held and hosted by South Sea Island with the presence of the resort management & staff, local communities, Department of Fisheries and a team from our local media. The programme highlighted the importance of protecting and sustaining our reefs in meeting our daily needs especially for tourism here in the Mamanucas. Everyone was part of the launching with resort guests, day trippers, invited guests, and staff all getting a chance to plant their own coral.

We wish South Sea Island the very best for this project and we encourage other resorts to take this on.
