Reef Check is one of MES on-going projects with the survey conducted at every member resort every six months. Cloud 9 and Vomo Island Resort are the latest inclusion to this survey. The reef check survey was carried out at Cloud 9 on the 7th of July and at Vomo on 17th of July.

Reef check survey determines the health status of a reef, using abundance and distribution of indicator species on the reef along a 100meters belt transect, which is replicated at two sites on the same reef. The indicator species span over types of fish, invertebrates and substrates. The reef check survey team at Cloud 9 consisted of 3 MES staff – Kolinio, Mesulame and Soro, while reef check team at Vomo consisted of Marica, Ilisapeci, Liku and Filomena.

The scientific reports of the reef check survey largely generates recommendations towards the proper care, management and protection of the reef with conservation projects at varying scale, be it marine or land projects that will both contribute towards the conservation of the reef systems at each resort.

MES now looks forward to the next Reef check survey for all our members in November.
