The Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area Network will conduct its first Western Division on the 4th -5th of November at Nawaka Village in Nadi. The meeting will be attended by District representatives, partner organizations including both government and non- government organizations engaged in community based marine management projects. The main objectives for this meeting are to:

  • Strengthen existing FLMMA Communities in the Western Division
  • Formalise the Western Yaubula meaning Natural Resources Management Support Team (YMST)
  • Introduce new sites.
  • Capacity building opportunity and align FLAMMA framework to specific government priorities on natural resource management

The Mamanuca Environment Society will be represented at the meeting and will conduct an overview through a presentation on the ongoing marine management projects explaining the experiences and challenges faced working with the resort and the village communities in supporting marine preserves, traditional tabu areas and restricting unsustainable fishing practices. The meeting will enhance information sharing with other community based partners doing similar conservation programs and help formulate the Western Division Yaubula Management Support Team and Operation Guide Manual as Guideline in forming District/ village Yaubula Team that will coordinate community resource management and implementation of resource management action plans for respective villages. The meeting will be attended by MES Project Manager and MES District Representative, Ratu Jerry Nasusu. The team hopes to share information gathered from this meeting in the next District meeting and allow closer partnership with the Nadroga Provincial Office.
