A team of three led by MES Project Manager Marica Vakacola conducted a long day clean up campaign on Yaro Levu, a settlement which has been a village to many hotel workers on the prestige resort at Mana Island.
Yaro Levu is situated closer to the backpacker’s accommodation site and further from the Mana Island Resort & Spa. The proximity of the village poses a huge task to the settlers as they need to take good care of their surrounding since they play a major role in displaying the setting of the whole island. They house a nice white sandy beach with crystal clear water. Such initiative taken by MES can be beneficial to the people in a way that they are educated on keeping their surrounding clean and tidy.
The clean up took place from the village and ended towards the beach. The team were joined and supported by a great number of children who were spending their school holidays on the island. Nothing beats the nice fine weather of the Mamanuca group of islands and with such activities like this happening, the day cannot pass by without a sense of laughter and fulfillment as all participants carried out their respective tasks with sense of enjoyment. MES volunteer Nomai explained that it was interesting to participate in some kind of activities like the clean up as she did not only broaden her knowledge of experiencing community engagement activities but also in giving something back to the community of Yaro Levu which is better and will benefit the island as a whole.
After a few hours of hard work cleaning up, the activity came to an end and all the trashes collected were placed together in a proper place. Children and other participants were treated to light refreshment provided by MES as a compliment for their hard efforts.
