The International day for the preservation of ozone layer is a platform to spread awareness of the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for solutions to preserve it. Resort operators in the Mamanuca’s are taking a step forward in restoring and protecting natural ecosystems through various environment projects.

For Mana Island Resort & SPA, E- Day is dedicated to environment projects. The International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer was celebrated on the 11th of September in which the programme was schedule at 1.30pm. A total of 65 adults and 30 kids from the resorts were also part of the programme. Held at the Activity Lawn, MES Project Officer – Ilisapeci Sokidi gave a short briefing on the importance of celebrating this world marked event. She highlighted that damage to the ozone layer is threatening life on earth. Tree planting and Turtle release were the main activities of the day. There were 20 trees that were planted by Guests, Kids club members, Mana SDA school students & resort staff along North Beach.

Turtle Release was the highlight of the day. The juvenile hawksbill turtle was rescued by a staff member of Likuliku Lagoon Resort and was taken to Mana Turtle Recovery Pond for further monitoring by MES team. Before the turtle release, Ili gave a short briefing on the importance of rehabilitation of turtle programme in Mana. “Turtles are listed as an endangered marine species in Fiji due to overfishing,” Ili said. “Such act by Mana is a positive indication of being loyal towards the conservation of endangered species. “More to that, the Mamanuca region is a common nesting site of turtles. She added that their protection within the region is important as it will help maintain their population.

The turtle was tagged by MES Team and was released from North Beach by Professor Matsumoto a returnee in house guest at the resort. All participants of the day witnessed the release of this turtle. Mr Matsumoto commended on the programme as he congratulated the resort for its commitment to conservation.
