Bird watching will be introduced to interested member resorts of MES as a totally new activity. Castaway Island Resort will be pioneering this activity. Designated staff from the resort, from the ‘activities’ department, will undergo training on the 27th and 28th of July. Betani Salusalu, the current MES Project Manager, who attained his bird identification skills during his time at Bird Life International a few years back will be conducting the training. Not only will the participants learn about the common birds of Castaway Island but of the Fiji Islands. At the end of the training, participants will have also learnt bird watching skills and identification techniques.
“Fiji is known to support a wide range of birds, many of which are found no where else in the world. According to Bird Life International experts: Vilikesa T. Masibalavu and Guy Dutson in their publication ‘Important Bird Areas in Fiji’, there are 139 bird species that are housed in Fiji: 87 species are breeding birds while 52 bird species only visit Fiji.
