World Maritime Day celebrates the contributions of the international maritime industry’s contributions to world’s economy.  It is a day to focus on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment. World Maritime Day is celebrated this year with the theme; Sustainable Development – IMO”S contribution beyond Rio+20.

A first of its kind, Castaway Island Resort observed the day, involving its in house guests with various activities. The day turned out to be a long and enjoyable one as the program for the maritime day began at 9:30am and ended at 9:15pm.

At 9:30am guests who opted to be part of the program were taken on a guided snorkel at the resorts coral and clam farm. Guests were also fortunate to be part of one of MES’s ongoing projects, which is coral planting. Children and adults alike got the chance to plant their very own coral which will be transplanted back onto the natural reefs after six to seven months.

After breaking from lunch participants of the program took part in the trash line game, testing the player’s knowledge on how long it takes various types of rubbish to decompose over time. This was followed by the beach and underwater cleanup. A game of touch footy and volleyball provided some physical exercise before resuming for the evening program.

To kick off the evening program, members of the Kids Club took part in a show and tell on how to save the oceans; this received many cheers and applause from the audience, who were mainly parents. The day ended with a power point presentation by MES on marine environment.
