‘Coralreefchallenge’ Competition Updates
The students of Namamanuca Primary School are well into their monitoring process of their little coral reef area that is located approximately 250 meters from their school. During our last visit to the school, located in Yanuya Village in the Mamanuca groups of islands, a significant change in the general appearance of the school and its surrounding environment was noticed. The beach directly adjacent to the school, leading up to the designated reef area now looked clean and immaculate. This is a result of the devoted efforts of the class 7 participants of the competition with the steadfast leadership of their keen teacher, Miss Taina.
The eager youngsters are continually assisted on their coral reef monitoring process through MES’s guidance. On the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of July, the participants were taught how to effectively monitor their reef area. They were taught what and how to pin point the changes in their coral reef as a result of their entire action plan.
The ‘coralreefchallenge’ competition will end on the 1st of September, where all competitors will have to submit results of their activities to the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP). Our next visit to the school is scheduled to the 2nd of August. Until then, we wish the students well.
