World Environment Day 2009

MES celebrated World Environment Day with Malolo District School and Namamanuca Primary School. With the theme in mind” Your planet needs you, unite to combat climate change”, the students enacted skits, said speeches, wrote essays, and drew posters. At the start of the event the MES gave a brief speech on climate change and its effects, evidence of climate change in Fiji and the Pacific, and ways in which we can all contribute to combating climate change. The whole school stood and listened intently to all that was being said. The highlight of the event was the planting of 50 trees by the students.

Most importantly the students were made aware of the seriousness of climate change and of the many different ways they each could contribute to saving our planet. We are confident that our usual visits to the school will instill in the kids a sense of responsibility towards conservation and protection of their environment. We would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to those companies that have continued to support our cause with kind sponsorship and donations. Special thanks goes out to ANZ Banking Group Limited for sponsoring MES with prizes for the students, Coca Cola Limited for donating P.E.T waste bags for the schools in the region, and to the department of Forestry for supplying us with the 50 seedlings that we planted.
