International Year of the Reef Competitions for Schools

This year has been dedicated specially to our reefs worldwide. In the Pacific region, a leading organisation called SPREP (South Pacific Regional Environment Programme) has put together coral reef activities and competitions for students to participate in. One such competition is the ‘coralreefchallenge’ which requires students to choose a reef area and nurture it.

With the assistance and guidance of the MES, Namamanuca Primary School took the challenge and has been selected to progress to Phase 2 of 3 of the ‘coralreefchallenge’ competition. The second phase of the competition involves the implementation process of the school’s Action Plan which was prepared during Phase 1. To assist the students in the implementation process, SPREP has awarded them with FJD$1062.50. Phase 2 will end on 1 September 2008 and all participating schools will need to submit video footage of completed activities to SPREP for judging the overall competition winner.
