World Water Day Celebration 2009
On May 26, MES assisted Mana SDA and Malolo District School in their celebration of “World Water Day”. International World Water Day is held annually on March 22 as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
MES conducted a power-point presentation elaborating more on this year’s theme “Connecting Our Pacific: Shared Water Shared Opportunities”, and on the important roles water plays in our lives, water management and safety. The students who were very attentive participated actively in answering questions posed to them. Water testing was also demonstrated using the LaMotte Water Safety Community Tool Kit provided by our partner organisation Live and Learn based in Suva.
Parameters that are being tested for are the coliform bacteria, nitrates, phosphates, and dissolved oxygen. Water from the school tanks that hold rainwater and the borehole water running from the taps were tested. At the conclusion of the program water quality kits for the daily testing of their drinking water were given out and also awareness materials for the schools. The schools are excited about the tests and curious to know the levels of these parameters in their drinking water to see if these levels are safe for drinking!
